Abstract
The present study is to identify social-exclusion multi-dimensionally and assess the impacts of its factors upon their psychological well-being by means of one-to-one survey with 301 elderly who visited a senior center. The result of the examination is expected to be able to provide meaningful implications to improve mental health of the elderly. The findings of this study can be summarized as follows. The social exclusion, which was grounded into four dimensions of social interaction, productive, political engagement, and consumption was measured. As a result of the analysis, the degree of social exclusion was around 2.70(mean). The average degree of social interaction was 2.90 while other dimensions¡¯ were 3.16 (productive), 2.92 (political engagement) and 1.89 (consumption). The results show that the elderly¡¯s social exclusion has powerful influence on their psychological well-being. The most significant factor was productive even though the others such as social exclusion, sexism and subjective health condition were also important. This study suggests directions for social work practice by examining major factors for the psychological well-being, and future research directions are suggested in this study.
